Waterproofing agent

GREIBOSOL HPH

GREIBOSOL HPH is a high-performance synthetic anionic waterproofing agent based on synthetic fatty substances and a special emulsifying procedure, supplied as a white viscous emulsion. It is specifically developed for chrome-tanned and combination-tanned leathers requiring extraordinary resistance against water, making it the product of choice for demanding waterproof leather applications in footwear, outdoor articles, equestrian, and technical leather goods.

Additional fatliquoring is not necessary when using GREIBOSOL HPH as a standalone waterproofing treatment. However, incorporating GREIBOSOL HPH into regular fatliquor combinations frequently results in a remarkable increase in softness alongside the waterproofing effect, offering tanners the flexibility to optimise both water resistance and handle in a single fatliquoring recipe. Leathers treated with GREIBOSOL HPH can be shaded and finished with all standard finishing systems without compromise to the waterproofing performance.

For optimal distribution of GREIBOSOL HPH throughout the full leather cross-section, it is advisable to pre-run 0.2 to 0.5% ammonia prior to application. The ammonia raises the local pH of the leather and opens the fibre structure, enabling a significantly more even distribution and deeper uptake of the waterproofing agent throughout the leather. The best waterproofing effects are achieved by subsequent fixation with mineral tanning salts in a fresh bath after washing, which converts the waterproofing emulsion components into durable hydrophobic metal salt complexes that are permanently anchored within the leather fibre structure.

GREIBOSOL HPH can be diluted with water at 60°C under stirring, or added undiluted to the float. Stir thoroughly before use. Please note: GREIBOSOL HPH is not stable in mineral tanning floats and should not be applied at this stage of the process. The product is frost-sensitive and must be stored and transported accordingly.

Application Examples

GREIBOSOL HPH is the preferred waterproofing agent for all chrome-tanned and combination-tanned leather applications where extraordinary and durable water resistance is the primary requirement, including safety footwear, outdoor and hiking footwear, equestrian leather goods, and technical leather articles.

For standalone waterproofing applications, GREIBOSOL HPH is applied in the fatliquoring stage, preceded by 0.2 to 0.5% ammonia to open the fibre structure and ensure even distribution throughout the full leather cross-section. Following the fatliquoring and drying stage, the leather is fixed with mineral tanning salts in a fresh bath after washing, where the fixing reaction permanently anchors the waterproofing components within the leather structure and ensures the durability of the water-resistant effect under demanding conditions of use.

In combination with standard fatliquor recipes for soft leather articles, GREIBOSOL HPH is incorporated as a waterproofing component alongside conventional anionic fatliquors, where it contributes its extraordinary water resistance to the finished leather while simultaneously enhancing the overall softness of the fatliquor recipe a combination of properties particularly valued in premium soft waterproof leathers for garment, boot, and outdoor footwear applications.

For leather articles requiring dyeing and finishing after waterproofing treatment, GREIBOSOL HPH supports full compatibility with standard shading and finishing systems, ensuring that the waterproofing treatment does not interfere with colour application or finish adhesion.
